Unit 1: Oral Communication

This unit is designed to build students’ conversation confidence. It provides them with speaking models that will help them in exchange of greetings, ideas, thought and feelings.

At the completion of this course you will be able to:

·      Greet people and start and finish a conversation

·      Engage in a telephone conversation

·      Give compliments

·      Extend congratulations/sympathy

·      Express feelings

·      Ask for information/explanation

·      Exchange opinions and ideas

·      Suggest/advise/persuade/insist etc.

 

Unit 2: Oral Presentations (Download)

This unit focuses on building students’ confidence to speak fluently and persuasively before an audience. It also aims at establishing the importance of presentation skills in clinical context.

At the completion of this unit, you will be able to:

·      Discern elements of a good presentation

·      Select topics of common interest and share useful information

·      Learn how to prepare and organize a good presentation using a variety of strategies/modes to convey ideas

·      Handle questions directed from the audience

·      Engage in thought-provoking discussions

·      Wrap up convincingly, restating the key points.

Unit 3: Vocabulary

This unit is designed to build students verbal skills by making them aware of different categories of lexical items.

At the completion of this course you will be able to:

·      Use the dictionary with facility

·      Identify various parts of speech

·      Enhance their knowledge of root words

·      Learn some of the common suffixes and prefixes used in medical terminology

·      Use some of the idiomatic phrases used to describe physical ailments

·      Enhance their knowledge of idioms and phrasal verbs in general

 

Unit 4: Grammar

This unit aims at enabling students to make appropriate use of specified grammatical items.

At the completion of this unit, you will be able to:

·       Complete sentences and paragraphs using the appropriate form of the present and past continuous tense.

·      Maintain subject verb agreement in sentences

·      Write sentences using the correct word order

·      Convert active sentences into passive and vice versa

·      Change direct speech into indirect speech and vice versa

·      Differentiate between present perfect and past simple

·      Use the definite and indefinite articles correctly

·      Insert correct prepositions of time and place in sentences.

 

Unit 5: Reading Comprehension

This unit aims at enabling students to read and comprehend fairly complex, unfamiliar, nursing and non-nursing, authentic texts with appropriate speed and adequate understanding.

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

·      Predict the content of the text through titles, subtitles, non-linguistic devices etc.

·      Grasp the main idea through skimming

·      Search specific points of information through scanning

·      Develop the skill of inferring meaning of a word by considering its context

·      Recognize cohesive devices

·      Respond to questions of literal comprehension

·      Respond to questions involving re-interpretation and inference

·      Respond to questions of personal response

 

Unit 7: Report Writing

This unit will provide learners with an evaluation criterion for writing correct, concise and informative field visit reports.

At the completion of this unit you will be able to:

·      Provide biographical information of the filed visit site

·      Document observations critically

·      Establish purpose and function of the visit

·      Write a legible report with ideas following logically from one point to another.
